KTGR is highlighting an outstanding local high school athlete each week!

This week feature Hickman senior track athlete Athena Peterson. Last week at the Girls Night Out meet in Springfield, Peterson won the long jump, triple jump, 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles events.

She also set school records with a long jump of 20 feet, 2 1/2 inches and a triple jump of 40 feet, 7 3/4 inches. The two jumps made her the first female in Missouri history with a long jump of at least 20 feet and a triple jump of at least 40 feet.

“Athena is a shining example of how hard work pays off,” said Hickman track and field coach Stewart Johnson. “Athena puts in quality practice time and her work in the offseason when no one is paying attention is now showing up in her senior season. Despite her successes of the past three years, she has taken nothing for granted as she embarks on her last year as a Kewpie before she starts her collegiate career at the University of Louisville. She provides a great example for her team on how to prepare to succeed.”

Hickman girls track and field will next compete at the Kansas Relays this weekend.
