Women’s Basketball Picks Up AMC Win on the Road

St. Louis, Mo. – The Columbia College women’s basketball team picked up its third American Midwest Conference (AMC) win with a 67-63 victory against the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy (UHSP) in St. Louis, Mo. 
 
The Cougars are now 10-4 overall and 3-0 in the AMC, while the loss drops UHSP to 9-6 overall and 1-1 in conference action. CC is the last remaining unbeaten team in conference play. 
 
CC started off the game on a 5-0 run, starting with a jumper by Mallory Shetley, followed by a three-pointer by Clare Shetley. The Cougars saw their lead grow to as many as eight points in the opening frame when Clare Shetley knocked down a jumper with 4:39 remaining (11-3). 
 
UHSP, who was trailing 19-14 to begin the second frame, used a quick 4-0 run to climb within 19-18, but back-to-back three-pointers from Peyton Crowe stretched the Cougar lead back to seven (25-18). The Eutectics kept the game close, as CC would hold a 28-26 advantage at the intermission. 
 
The Cougars were able to open the game up a bit in the third period, as they outscored UHSP, 24-17, in the period. CC started the quarter on a 9-3 run and led 36-29 with 6:34 remaining in the period, but the Euts came storming back and trimmed their deficit down to three points (46-43) with just under a minute left. CC ended the quarter with back-to-back old-fashioned three-point plays by Mallory Shetley and Abby Backes and took a 52-43 lead into the final period. 
 
Columbia saw their largest lead of the game come at the 4:37 mark of the final period when Allison Stiers made a layup extending the Cougar lead to double-digits (56-46) with 4:37 left in the game. The Cougars ended the final two minutes going 9-10 from the foul line, sealing the road victory. 
 
Key Moment:
After Grace Beyer hit a jumper to get UHSP within three points (46-43) late in the third period, Mallory Shetley and Abby Backes ended the quarter with back-to-back three-point plays to give CC a 52-43 advantage going into the final period. 
 
By the Numbers:
16-19 – The Cougars shot 84.2-percent from the foul line, including 9-10 in the fourth quarter. 
40 – CC led for the entire 40 minutes. 
24-12 – Columbia outscored the Eutectics in the paint.
