Women’s Basketball Opens AMC Play with Double Digit Win

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women’s basketball team added another win to their record this evening, defeating Lyon (Ark.) 67-53 in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) season opener. The Cougars improve to 8-3 (1-0 AMC) on the season, while the Scots fall to 5-4 (0-1 AMC).
 
Both teams’ first quarter was slow going, but back-to-back three’s by Mackenzie Dubbert and Peyton Crowe got the Cougars going for the start of the second period, 15-11. Columbia shot 37.5 percent from the field, while Lyon recorded a 42.7 percent field goal percentage.
 
The Scots came within one after a successful “and-one” attempt from Jade Giron, but that was the closest they would get the rest of the game at 15-14. Columbia extended their lead to ten halfway through the period after a made jump shot from Kamryn Mennemeyer, 27-17. Lyon made it interesting going on a 7-0 run to get within three points at 27-24. Going into the half, the Cougars held a 34-29 advantage.
 
To start the second half, Columbia produced a 7-0 run, resulting in a 12-point Cougar lead, 41-29. Lyon cut their deficit down to six, shooting 29.4 percent from the field. Columbia held a 49-43 edge over the Scots heading into the final period.
 
The fight from Lyon did not stay long as Columbia went on an 8-0 run to start the fourth quarter. The Cougars took the largest lead of the game of 15 with 3:58 remaining on the clock, 61-46. Columbia led the rest of the way, gaining a 67-53 victory.

At the start of the fourth quarter, an 8-0 run beginning with a layup from Mallory Shetley gave the Cougars the momentum to produce a 67-53 edge over the Scots.
