Women’s Basketball Falls on the Road at Arkansas

Women's Basketball Huddle

Columbia, Mo. – The University of Missouri women’s basketball team couldn’t break its skid against Arkansas, losing on the road, 61-33, Sunday afternoon at Bud Walton Arena.

Senior forward Hayley Frank (Strafford, Mo.) led the Tigers in scoring with eight points and rebounding with five rebounds. It is her sixth-consecutive contest leading Mizzou’s offensive attack.

The Tigers’ defense stood tall through the opening stretch of the first quarter. While waiting for the offense to find its rhythm, Mizzou (15-10, 4-8 SEC) held the Razorbacks (19-8, 6-6) to just two field goals in their first 10 shots.

Mizzou kept the deficit close despite a slow offensive start, and a twisting layup from Frank just before the end of the quarter cut the deficit to seven to wrap up the opening period.

Shooting struggles continued for the Tigers in the second quarter, as the Razorbacks extended their lead heading into the half. Arkansas embarked on a 10-0 run to build its advantage in the midst of Mizzou’s drought. Freshman guard Averi Kroenke (West Plains, Mo.) knocked down a pair of shots near the end of the half, but the Hogs’ edge continued to escalate leading into the break.

After sophomore forward Sarah Linthacum (Jefferson City, Mo.) put the Tigers on the board first to start the third quarter, Mizzou couldn’t capitalize as the second half began. Arkansas closed out the frame with another 10-0 run to put the contest out of reach.

In the fourth quarter, Mizzou outscored Arkansas, 15-14. Graduate guard Katlyn Gilbert (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded five points on 2-of-3 shooting in the period, while junior guard Mama Dembele (Manlleu, Spain) closed out the game with an and-1 layup.

From the field, Mizzou shot 28.3 percent while knocking down 6-of-11 (54.5%) from the charity stripe. On the other end, Arkansas hit 42.2 percent of its attempts from the floor, with a 9-of-23 (39.1%) performance from 3-point land.
