Women’s Basketball Defeats Missouri Baptist for 31st-Straight Time

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women’s basketball team played in their first home game since Dec. 11 and defeated the Spartans of Missouri Baptist University, 66-51.
 
Overall, the Cougars improve to 11-4 and remain unbeaten in American Midwest Conference (AMC) play at 4-0. The loss drops Missouri Baptist to 5-9 on the season and 2-2 in the league.
 
It was a back-and-forth first quarter, as Missouri Baptist held the largest lead of the period at 10-5 with 6:06 left. The Cougars ended the first quarter on an 11-2 run and had a 16-12 lead at the end of the first.
 
Missouri Baptist began the second on a 5-0 run to regain the lead at 17-16, but the Cougars outscored the Spartans, 14-7, in the final 8:27 of the first half. The Cougars shot 58.3-percent in the quarter and were led in scoring by Abby Backes, who scored six points in the frame.
 
The third quarter was the most competitive of the four quarters as each team scored 12 points. After a pair of Mallory Shetley free throws, the Cougars saw their lead reach nine (40-31). The Spartans battled back, but CC took a 42-36 lead into the final quarter.
 
The Cougars opened the game up in the final period. Backes scored 10 of her 16 points in the last 10 minutes. The Cougars used a 12-1 run in the middle of the quarter, which increased their lead to 13 points (55-42). Columbia led by double figures the rest of the way.
