Welker, Schreiber Earn SEC Honors

NCAA GYM: Mizzou Tigers Tri Meet vs. LSU Tigers and Arkansas Razorbacks

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri’s Shannon Welker and Sienna Schreiber earned the league’s top honors, voted by the head coaches from each institution, the Southeastern Conference announced Wednesday.

Welker was name SEC Coach of the Year and Schreiber tab as the SEC Specialist of the Year. Welker is the first coach in Mizzou history to be name the top coach in the league. Schreiber is only the second Tiger in program history to earn conference specialist of the year accolades and only the fourth to claim a major award from the SEC, joining Helen Hu, the 2020 Specialist of the Year. Morgan Porter, the 2016 Freshman of the Year, and Katelyn Trevino, the 2015 Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

This season Welker has led to Tigers to a record-breaking year. At the SEC Gymnastic Championships, the Tigers notched their highest ever championship score and finish. This past season the Tigers have set new program-best twice. Along with the highest season opener score in program history.

Schreiber has been a consistent force for the Tigers. On beam, Schreiber has not scored under a 9.875 all season, with an average of 9.920 and a National Qualifying Score (NSQ) of 9.935. She is currently ranked 13th overall. At SEC Championships Schreiber notched a 9.95 on beam, tying her for second.  This year, Schreiber has earned a team-high nine event titles, five on beam and four in the all-around. During her career as a Tiger, Schreiber has collected 19 event titles.

In addition, Mizzou placed five gymnasts to the All-SEC team and two on the All-Freshman team. Alisa Sheremeta, Helen Hu, Schreiber, Amari Celestine, and Jocelyn Moore all earn All-SEC recognition. Both Celestine and Amari were also named to the All-Freshman team.

The All-SEC team is comprised of student-athletes with the top two scores (including ties) on each event and in the all-around in the first and second sessions of the SEC Championship. The All-

Hu, a junior from Chicago, Ill. earned her second the All-SEC recognition of her career after finishing second on bars at the SEC Championship in the first session tying her season-best 9.875.

Sheremeta, a senior from Circleville, N.Y.  earned her first All-SEC recognition of her career after finishing second on beam at the SEC Championship in the first session tying her season-best 9.90.

Celestine, a freshman from Wildomar, Calif.  earned her first All-SEC and All-Freshman recognition of her early career after finishing second on floor at the SEC Championship in the first session with a 9.925. The 9.925 tied Celestine for This season Celestine has notched seven scores of 9.9 or better on floor, including a 9.975 which tied the program-high.

Moore, a freshman from Hillsborough, N.J. earned her first All-SEC and All-Freshman recognition of her career after finishing second on vault at the SEC Championships with a 9.95. This season Moore has scored a 9.95 three consecutive times. She has posted six scores of 9.925 or better this season.  

The No. 11 Mizzou gymnastics team will compete in the first session of the NCAA Raleigh Regional Second Round on Thursday, March 31 at 12 p.m. CT in Raleigh, N.C.
