Columbia, Mo. – The No.24-ranked Columbia College volleyball team swept the visiting Eagles of Williams Baptist University tonight in American Midwest Conference play, improving their record to 14-7 overall, and 3-0 in the AMC. With the win, the Cougars finish the month of September undefeated and push their win streak to 12.
The Cougars held an 18-10 lead in the first set until a 6-0 scoring run from the Eagles closed the lead to just two points, prompting a Columbia timeout. Out of the timeout, Abby Massengill and Beyza Bektasoglu powered the Cougars to the first set win, 25-20.
Jordan Starkey served the Cougars to a 4-1 lead in the second set. Olivia Skipworth extended the Cougars’ lead to 12-4 with more tough serving. Up 23-13, the Cougars used a kill from Luciana Paiva and a block from Ellie Rockers and Abby Massengill to take the second set, 25-13.
The third set saw the Cougars take another big lead at 11-4. The Eagles began to chip-away and close the gap, bringing themselves to within three, 12-15. Raven Buckley’s tough serving sparked a 7-0 scoring run for Columbia to take a 22-12 lead. Errors from the Eagles gave the Cougars the final three points to close out the match, 25-14.
Ellie Rockers had match-highs in both kills (11) and digs (8), while Abby Massengill followed closely with 10 kills on a .474 hitting percentage. Beyza Bektasoglu was error free with seven kills, and Kate Pani contributed six digs. Luisa Ferreira garnered 26 assists in two sets of play.
