Virgilio Paz Set for Pan-American Games

Sophomore Virgilio Paz is set to represent the Tigers on the national stage this week, competing for Venezuela in the Pan American Games.

Paz is one of 30 golfers to earn an invitation to the Games in Santiago, Chile. The action tees off on Thursday at Prince of Wales Country Club with the champion being crowned after four rounds of play that culminate on Sunday.

“I’m really excited to be playing my first Pan-American games, representing the University of Missouri and Venezuela at the same time,” Paz said. “Playing in Chile knowing that you’re playing for the University and also for Venezuela is a great honor.”

In his first season with the Tigers, Paz has appeared in all five tournaments this season – posting a 73.07 stroke average. He has finished among the team’s top two twice so far with his first collegiate top-five finish at the Chicago Highlands Invitational highlighting the season so far. In Chicago, Paz set his career best with a nine-under tally as the Tigers earned their first team title this year.

“It is a tremendous accomplishment for Virgilio to be selected to represent Venezuela in Chile,” said Missouri head coach Glen Millican. “He has worked hard and played great golf for a long time and this is something he has earned.

“In addition to Virgilio playing for himself and Venezuela, it is an honor for Mizzou Golf to have an athlete competing. Another great example of the student-athletes we have at Mizzou and how they can accomplish their goals on the biggest stage.”
