Tigers Fall in Opener at Ole Miss

Luke Mann

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Three errors and 12 runners left aboard created a frustrating night for University of Missouri baseball in a 7-5 loss to open the series at Ole Miss on Friday.

The three Mizzou (25-18, 7-15 SEC) errors led to three unearned runs on the night. Of the 12 men left aboard, six were stranded in scoring position for the Tigers.

Mizzou jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning but immediately surrendered three in the bottom half on a pair of free passes and an error. The Tigers would draw even in the sixth when Luke Mann launched a two-run shot 440-feet to right field. Again, Ole Miss answered immediately as Peyton Chatagnier jumped the first pitch of the bottom half to make it 6-5 Rebels.

Mann finished 2-for-5 with the homer and two RBI to lead the Tigers at the plate. Torin Montgomery added a 3-for-5 day while Ross Lovich had a pair of RBI in the loss. Austin Troesser (3-2) took the loss on the mound, surrendering a pair of runs in 1.1 innings of work.

Kemp Alderman powered the Ole Miss (25-19, 8-14 SEC) effort with a 4-for-4 day including a home run and three RBI.

IMPACT INNING

Trailing 6-5, Mizzou looked prime to draw even or more in the seventh inning, but a pair of spectacular defensive plays kept the Tigers off the board. With Lovich on second and one out, Ty Wilmsmeyer scorched a line drive up the middle. Ole Miss second baseman Chatagnier made a diving stab on one hop and scrambled to his feet in time to retire the speedy Wilmsmeyer. Following a walk, Nander De Sedas drove a ball deep to right center where TJ McCants made a leaping grab while crashing into the wall to rob the Tiger second baseman of extra bases and at least one RBI.

Ole Miss responded with an insurance run in its half of the seventh to provide the final of 7-5.
