Tennis Drops Match Against Liberty

Tennis header vs Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. — The University of Missouri tennis team falls 4-0 to the Lady Flames of Liberty University on Friday, Feb. 2, at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center. The Tigers are still searching for their first win of the young 2024 campaign, with Liberty advancing to a season record of 2-1.

The #16 ITA-ranked doubles team of senior Mae Canete and junior Inah Canete kicked off the meet with a 6-3 win against Tiffany Nguyen and Juliana Maria Romero Parra in the No. 1 spot. The No. 2 doubles duo of seniors Gabriela Martinez and Romary Cardenas Rifka dropped a hard-fought match 6-4 against Marina Davtyan and Maria Turchetto. Another close finish came from the No. 3 doubles pair of graduate student Emelie Schwarte and sophomore Andrea Artimedi who fell short of the win against Liberty, 6-3.

The Tigers could not hold on to the momentum from doubles play with Cardenas and Artimedi could not come away with the win against the Lady Flames, dropping in two-set matches. Schwarte took her tough singles battle against Turchetto to three sets but could not secure the win (6-0, 1-6, 6-2).

Mizzou continues its road series with competition against James Madison University at 9 a.m. CT on Saturday, Feb. 3 and will close out the weekend’s play with a match against Radford University later in the day at 6 p.m. at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center. Fans can tune in to the. live stream to catch the weekend’s action.

HEAD COACH BIANCA TURATI

“Hard luck with the doubles point. It was a solid performance from the Canete sisters, who are playing at a very good level. Ro and Gabi fought hard but came up just a little short. We need to work more on singles, and we need to get more physical. We’ll keep our heads up for tomorrow. Two good opportunities against James Madison and Radford.”
