Tennis Closes Sunday Doubleheader With Win Over Lindenwood

Emelie Schwarte v. Tenn 2023-24

COLUMBIA, Mo. — University of Missouri tennis earns one win in doubleheader action on Sunday, March 3, with a win against the Lindenwood Lions, 4-0, at the Green Tennis Center. Mizzou had an early morning loss at the Country Club of Missouri to No. 20 University of Tennessee, 4-0. With this weekend’s home opener, the Tigers walk away with two SEC matches under their belt and a 4-10 record for the young season.

The Tigers began the day with doubles play against the Volunteers at 9 a.m. and could not pull away with the doubles point. Heading into singles play, senior Mae Canete battled in a back-and-forth match in the No. 1 spot against the No. 23 ranked athlete, but the match went unfinished at 6-3, 3-6.

Mizzou turned it on for their afternoon match against the Lions at 4 p.m., dominating in doubles play to grab an early lead. In the No. 1 spot, the duo of M. Canete and junior Inah Canete forced Lindenwood into a shutout, 6-0, marking the No. 24 ranked pair’s second lights-out match of the weekend against the Lions. The doubles team of sophomore Andrea Artimedi and graduate student Emelie Schwarte topped Lindenwood in the No. 3 spot.

The team continued the momentum into singles play, with both Canete sisters going 6-0 in both sets against Lindenwood in the No. 1 and 2 spot. Artimedi threw it down in the No. 4 spot and collected the final point for the Tigers (6-0, 6-4), clinching the win against the Lions.

HEAD COACH BIANCA TURATI:

Another good day for us. The team played well and competed hard under super tough conditions this morning. We lost against Tennessee 4-0, but we are getting closer. We won the first set at #1 and #2 singles. Throughout the weekend, we proved twice, against two top-20 teams, that we could play at a high level. We need to work on how to better approach deuce points and tight, decisive moments of the matches. We got it done again against Lindenwood, playing good tennis. It was a super positive weekend for us. We are making progress.”
