LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Missouri women’s tennis team wrapped up the weekend at the ITA Central Regional Championships today, Oct. 15, totaling 14 victories across the four days of tournament play. Mizzou picked up eight singles and six doubles wins while competing at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.

Senior Mae Canete and junior Inah Canete faced off against the University of Kansas’ Gracie Mulville and Heike Janse Van Vuuren in the Doubles Quarterfinals to open today’s (Oct. 15) play after their previous Round of 16 win against the University of Nebraska. The sisters secured the win of 8-5 to boost them to the semifinals, facing off Dana Guzman and Alina Shcherbinina of the University of Oklahoma. After four wins for the doubles duo, M. Canete and I. Canete dropped the hard-fought match 6-3, 6-1.

Senior Romary Cardenas Rifka participated in extra singles matches today, snagging a victory against Kylin Sadler of Kansas. Junior Sophia McLellan and graduate student Gabriela Martinez also saw action today in extra singles matches, contesting against SEMO and Nebraska, respectively.

“Lots of positive takeaways from the trip. Tough conditions to play high-quality tennis. Four very windy days in Lawrence. But the group competed well overall. The Canete sisters had a great run in doubles, only losing in the semifinals against the number 1 seed and proving they can play at a very high level.

We are making progress, but we absolutely need to keep up the work at practice, go compete even harder at the UCA and Bulldogs Classic Invites to get ready for the Spring season.”
