Tennis Can’t Hold Off #40 Arkansas

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri tennis picked up some early momentum in singles but couldn’t finish off No. 40 Arkansas in the final Southeastern Conference match of the year for both teams, Friday at the Country Club of Missouri.

The Tigers honored seniors Eleanor Fay and Emelie Schwarte before Friday’s match. The SEC Championship begins next week in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Arkansas (12-10, 6-7 SEC) picked up the doubles point by winning the the second and third pairings, both by 6-3 margins.

Mizzou (10-15, 1-12 SEC) struck first in single as No. 104 Mae Canete took the first set, 7-5, and went on a tear to win the second set 6-0 and earn her 20th singles triumph of the season. 

Three of the four remaining matches went to a deciding third set. Andrea Artimedi won 7-5 in her decider to pick up the win. The Razorbacks took the wins at No. 2, 3 and 5 singles, respectively, to clinch the match.

No. 6 singles between Fay and Kacie Harvey, was left unfinished. 

Mizzou will play a doubleheader Saturday against Saint Louis on the Country Club of Missouri courts. First serve is slated for 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. CT, respectively. 

Saint Louis (16-5) enters on a four-match winning streak with the Billikens winning six of seven overall. The 2023 team’s 16 victories match the 2017 and 1979 teams for the third-highest total in program history.
