Tennis’ Canate Sisters Advance to Doubles Quarterfinals of ITA Midwest Regionals

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Missouri women’s tennis team closes out day three of play at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Jayhawk Tennis Center, hosted by the University of Kansas today, Oct. 14. 

The Tigers add a singles and doubles win from the day to total the weekend with nine victories – six singles and three doubles. Junior Inah Canete, senior Mae Canete and senior Romary Cardenas Rifka have all earned multiple wins this weekend. 

Advancing to the round of 32 from a singles win against UMKC yesterday (Oct. 13) M. Canete snagged a morning win against Malvika Shukla of Creighton University, 6-0, 6-2. M. The junior dropped the afternoon singles match in the round of 16 against Daianne Hayashida of The University of Iowa in a close battle, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.

Sisters and doubles team I. Canete and M. Canete saw round of 16 doubles action this morning, coming off their wins from yesterday (Oct. 13) against Kansas State University and Creighton University. The doubles duo added another win this morning when they faced off the University of Nebraska’s Anfisa Danilchenko and Ana Carmen Zamburek in a nail-biting match of 8-7 [7-3 the tie break]. This triumph advances the team to the doubles Quarterfinals tomorrow morning (Oct. 15) at 9:00 a.m. against Gracie Mulville and Heike Janse Van Vuuren of the University of Kansas.

Cardenas Rifka and graduate student Gabriela Martinez had doubles action in extra matches for the day, where they secured two wins against Kansas State University and Saint Louis University. I. Canete also competed in extra matches, snagging a singles victory against Oklahoma.

The Tigers will finish competing at the ITA Regional before hitting the road to attend the UCA Invitational hosted by Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark., from Friday, Oct. 27 to Saturday, Oct. 28.
