Quinton Brown

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Missouri track and field team opened the 2024 indoor campaign Friday at the first day of the Vanderbilt Invitational at the Vanderbilt Multipurpose Facility in Nashville, Tennessee. Ten Tigers finished among the top-five competitors in their respective events while 13 competitors set personal-best marks.

Petra Gombas posted the best result of the day for Mizzou, topping the podium in the women’s weight throw with a personal-best toss of 19.30m. The first-place finish counts as the Balatonalmadi, Hungary, product’s first event win at the collegiate level. Additionally, her throw ranks among the top-50 women’s weight throw marks in the country.

Other top results included graduate student Mitch Weber and junior Sam Innes both placing in the top four of the men’s weight throw. Weber took third with a 20.48m throw, with Innes right behind him in fourth with a personal-best 19.46m throw. To round out the night, half of the top-eight finishing positions of the men’s 1000m belonged to members of the Missouri Tigers. Junior Johnny Martin and sophomore Ethan Lee earned the second and third positions, respectively, both in their event debut. Sophomores Andrew Simard and Colby Revord also cracked the top-eight in their indoor debuts.

Junior Claudina Diaz took care of business in the women’s high jump, taking bronze with a 1.74m jump, while Quinton Brown brought home a top-five finish in the men’s high jump, placing fourth with a jump of 2.04m.

Senior Alicia Burnett’s 24.39 in the women’s 200m set a new personal-best during indoor season and her fourth-place finish matched the best indoor result in the event.

True freshman Sterling Scott made his collegiate debut in the men’s long jump, placing sixth with a 7.24m leap.
