Success In St. Louis As Soccer Defeats Missouri State, 2-0

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Missouri soccer team defeated Missouri State, 2-0, on its trip to St. Louis for the Mizzou to the Lou series on Sunday, Sept. 9. The victory gives Mizzou a 4-1-2 record on the year, while the Bears drop to 5-1-2 on the season. 

How It Happened

Mizzou opened the game on the attack as the Tigers had four shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes of the first half. After an end-to-end start to the game, sophomore Bella Carrillo delivered a cross from the right side of the box, and classmate Kylee Simmons finished with the header to give the Tigers the 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.

In the closing moments of the half, Missouri State launched multiple attempts to score the equalizer, but Bella Hollenbach came up with two huge saves to keep the Tigers in front before the break. 

The Tigers opened the second half with a quick goal to extend the lead. Freshman Olivia Chianelli assisted classmate Brianna Buels with a beautiful ball that Buels placed in the upper 90 to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the 51st minute. After the second goal, the Mizzou shut down threats posed by the Bears as Hollenbach ended the day with five saves to earn the clean sheet. 

Game Notes

  • The win is the Tiger’s third against Missouri State, bringing the all-time record to 3-0-1 against the Bears. This marks the first game against the Bears since 1998, which the Mizzou won 7-1.
  • Hollenbach got her second win of the season, making five saves in the match, a season-high. Furthermore, the clean sheet is her first of the season and the fourth of her career.
  • Simmons’ 22nd-minute goal is her fifth of the 2023 season, and the assist from Carillo is her second of the year and her Tiger career. 
  • Buels’ 51st-minute goal is her second of the 2023 season, and the assist from Chianelli is her second of the 2023 season.
  • Freshman Ana DiMaria, a resident of Fenton, Mo., appeared at her home field, where her Grandfather is a member of the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame. 
  • The Tigers topped the Bears in shots (17-10) and shots on goal (7-5).

Up Next

Missouri will head south to Gainesville, Fla., to take on the Gators to open up Southeastern Conference play on Friday, Sept. 15. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. and will be streamed on SEC Network+.
