softball senior recognition

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College softball team was back in action today with an American Midwest Conference doubleheader against the Stars of Stephens College. Before game one, Columbia took time to recognize their two graduating seniors, Emily King and Jodi Polly.

In game one, the Cougars would score first with a two-run single from Jazlin Gottman in the bottom of the second. Both teams were scoreless until the sixth inning when Emma Bruno singled to right field, scoring two runs.

With a 4-0 lead, the Cougars recorded the three final outs in the top of the seventh to take the game one win.

Ella Schouten tied her season-high with 13 strikeouts on the mound.

Game two saw the Stars jump out to a big lead after registering five runs in the third inning.

Columbia responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth as Sophie Angel’s double scored one and an error from the Stars scored the second.

Leading 5-2, the Stars tacked on another run in the sixth to push their lead to four runs.

The Cougars tried to get things going on offense and would score twice in the sixth off of a two-run single from Jazlin Gottman.

After holding Stephens scoreless in the top of the seventh, Columbia managed to get two runners on base, but it would not be enough as the last out was recorded and the win would go to the Stars.

Columbia ends the regular season with a 19-17 overall record and a 10-8 mark in conference play. They will take a week off of competition before beginning play in the AMC Softball Tournament as the hosts.
