No. 2 Wrestling Shines In Seasons’ First NCAA Individual Coaches Rankings

WR Team Lineup at Mizzou to the Lou 23-24

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The No. 2-ranked University of Missouri wrestling team saw all 10 starters ranked in the first individual NCAA Coaches Poll of the 2023-24 season. The Tigers are among four teams with all 10 listed in the top 33 of their respective weight classes.

Rankings are determined by a vote of 14 coaches in each weight class with two head coaches from each of the seven conferences. Coaches may only consider a wrestler that has been designated as a starter at a respective weight class. Wrestlers must have eight Division I matches in the weight class to be considered with at least one within the last 30 days.

Of the four schools with all 10 ranked, Mizzou is the only one with five in the top five. At 157 pounds, redshirt senior Brock Mauller comes in at No. 5 with a 9-1 record; two ranked wins and seven bonus-point victories. Also in the top five, redshirt senior Peyton Mocco is No. 4 at 174 pounds. Mocco is 7-1 this season, with all his wins coming via bonus points. Joining him is classmate Zach Elam, who also comes in at No. 4 but at 285 pounds. Z. Elam leads the team in wins (14-0) and falls (7) this season.

Two-time National Champion Keegan O’Toole remains at No. 1 at 165 pounds. The junior is 11-0 this season and has a 100 percent bonus rate in matches at 165. Classmate Rocky Elam joins O’Toole in the top 5, coming in at No. 3 at 197 pounds. The three-time All-American is 8-0 and coming off two major decisions in his last two matches.

Missouri gets two more in the top 10, with redshirt junior Noah Surtin ranking sixth with a 10-1 record. Surtin has totaled six bonus-point and three ranked wins this season. Additionally, redshirt freshman Clayton Whiting is No. 9 at 184 pounds. Whiting has two ranked wins this season and holds an 8-1 record.

Redshirt junior Logan Gioffre scrapped his way to No. 11 at 149 pounds with a 5-4 record and two ranked wins this season. Gioffre has faced some of the toughest competition in the country, having the second most ranked matches (5) behind O’Toole (6) of all the starters.

Rounding out the starting 10, redshirt sophomore Josh Edmond is listed at No. 20 at 141 pounds with an 8-3 record, while redshirt freshman Kade Moore continues a stellar season with a 5-0 dual record (9-2 overall) since taking the starting spot at 133 pounds and ranks No. 20 in the poll.
