No. 14 Gymnastics Upsets No.8 Alabama in final SEC matchup

COLUMBIA, Mo. — The No. 14 University of Missouri gymnastics team hosted No. 8 Alabama in its final SEC duel meet of the season Friday at Hearnes Center. The Tigers bested the Crimson Tide in a 197.075-196.750 upset. This victory marks the first regular season victory against the Crimson Tide in program history. 

Mizzou wrapped up SEC play tonight with a winning record. This is the first time in program history that the Tigers have recorded above a .500 in SEC conference action. 

The Tigers recorded their third consecutive 197+ team score. This is Mizzou’s first time since 2004 that they have gone three straight meets above 197 in the regular season. 

Vault

Missouri opened the meet with its vault rotation — scoring a collective 49.150. Sophomore Amari Celestine and senior Sienna Schreiber led the Tigers with a 9.875 and 9.850, respectively.

Sophomore Jocelyn Moore (9.825), graduate student Hannah McCrary (9.800), sophomore Grace Anne Davis (9.800) and freshman Addison Lawrence (9.750) additionally competed in the rotation.

Bars

The Tigers’ next rotation posted a dominant performance on the bars. Moore (9.925), senior Helen Hu (9.875) and junior Kyra Burns led Missouri’s unit.

Schreiber also secured a 9.850, while graduate student Alisa Sheremeta and Celestine each posted 9.825. 

Beam

Hu led the beam rotation once again, posting a near-perfect 9.500 to help propel the Tigers to 49.100 collectively in the event. Sheremeta and Lawrence followed behind her with 9.900 and 9.850, respectively.

Schreiber anchored the unit with a 9.750 posting, while McCrary (9.650) and Davis (9.600) cracked the rotation.

Floor

In the final rotation, Missouri’s floor team posted a 49.475 led by Sheremeta (9.925) and McCrary and Celestine with 9.900 each.

Sophomore Alonna Kratzer and Schreiber scored 9.875 to secure the Tigers’ narrow win.

Up next

Missouri will host a quad meet against North Carolina, Ball State and Southeast Missouri State next Friday at 6 p.m. in Hearnes Center.
