No. 13 Missouri Picks Up Two Conference Wins In Doubleheader

Sean Harman

OREM, Utah – The 13th-ranked University of Missouri wrestling program got back in the win column Saturday night with two victories against Big 12 opponents, beating Wyoming 30-6 and Utah Valley 18-15 at Lockhart Arena in Orem, Utah.

The Tigers opened the double-header with a dominant effort against Wyoming, picking up eight total wins against Wyoming and holding the Pokes to single digits for the second consecutive season.

The upset of the dual came at 174 pounds as redshirt freshman Sean Harman took down No. 11 Hayden Hastings in a 4-2 decision.

Missouri logged three bonus-point wins, highlighted by a first-period fall from redshirt-sophomore Jeremiah Kent at 184 pounds. Freshman Trey Crawford picked up his first bonus-point win in a dual this season in a 16-0 technical fall and redshirt sophomore Zach Elam finished off the matchup with a 17-4 major decision.

At 125 pounds, Noah Surtin started the dual with a 4-0 shutout. After Crawford at 133 pounds, the Tigers got a 9-2 win from junior Allan Hart, a sudden-victory win from freshman Josh Edmond at 149 pounds and a 5-3 win for junior Jarrett Jacques over No. 14 Jacob Wright at 157 pounds.

In the night cap, Mizzou started strong behind a massive 21-5 technical fall from Edmond at 149 pounds. He was followed with wins from Jacques at 157 pounds, a major decision from Harman at 174 pounds and a tight decision in Kent’s favor. Zach Elam wrestled to a 5-0 shutout at 285 pounds to finish the scoring for the Tigers.

UVU picked up wins at 165, 197, 125, 133 and 141 pounds to close the dual.

Top Tigers

·       Harman took down Hastings for the first ranked victory of his career. He was previously 0-3 against the Wyoming 174-pounder, having lost three times last season.

·       Harman and Edmond’s bonus-point wins against UVU provided the necessary cushion to hold off the Wolverines. Their combined nine points accounted for half the Tigers’ scoring.

·       In addition to Harman and Edmonds, Elam, Jacques and Kent went 2-0 for the doubleheader.

Hear from Coach

“Sean Harman stepped up and got two big wins for us tonight,” Head coach Brian Smith said. “He came out and beat a ranked opponent and then got the major [decision] in the second dual. We came out with two wins, but we still need to put all the pieces together. We’re going to head home and work this week to get ready for a really tough dual next weekend.”
