No. 10 Columbia Earns First Conference Win in Sweep Over WBU

Columbia, Mo. – The 10th-ranked Cougars of Columbia College opened their American Midwest Conference season as they played host to the Eagles of Williams Baptist University tonight at the Arena of Southwell Complex. The Cougars made quick work tonight as they rolled to a 3-0 (25-8, 25-7, 25-8) sweep over the Eagles, moving their record to 13-3 overall and 1-0 in AMC play; the Eagles fell to 2-8 overall and 0-1 in AMC play. 

The first few points of set one were back and forth between the two teams. Clara Gower went to the service line as the Cougars were up 4-3 after kills from Alayna Rooks and Janae Johnson. Gower would serve the Cougars from their 4-3 lead to a 15-4 lead that was only ended by a service error. Up 23-7, the Cougars earned the final two points of the set with a service ace from Heather Bana followed by a kill from Luisa Ferreira.

The Cougars took the early lead in set two through more tough serving from Clara Gower. With a 10-5 lead, Jordan Starkey rotated to the service line. From there, Starkey would serve 10-consecutive times to put the Cougars up 20-5 before the Eagles were able to score to stop the run. Two service aces from Allana Capella helped the Cougars take their lead to 23-7, before kills from Ellie Rockers and Allana Capella ended the second set. 

An eight-point service run from Magdalena Bostal gave the Cougars the quick 8-0 lead in the third set. Columbia continued to keep the pressure on WBU as they worked to a 23-6 lead. A kill from Agatha Emanuelle followed by a kill from Alayna Rooks ended the third and final set for the Cougars. 

The Cougars dominated every statistical category as they lead in points earned (58-16), kills (41-15), service aces (10-1), blocks (7-0), assists (38-15), and digs (47-36). 

Columbia is back in action tomorrow as they take on the Mustangs of Central Baptist College at home. The AMC match is schedule to start at 11:00AM.
