Milwaukee, Wis. — Mizzou Tennis heads north to play in the 2021 Milwaukee Classic from Sept. 18-20, marking the first time in school history the team will compete in the ITA invite only tournament.

The Tigers continue to make headlines as Bronte Murgett, Marta Oliveira and Ellie Wright were awarded main draw spots in the Milwaukee Classic for the first time in program history.

Additionally, Gabriela Martinez was placed on the alternate list for the tournament for the first time in Mizzou history.

The Milwaukee Tennis Classic accepts 26 applicants into the tournament along with six wildcard spots. The MTC is classified as an ITA Gold Level event, meaning the winner of the singles competition will earn an automatic wildcard entry in the ITA Fall Nationals Tournament.

There are a variety of teams that will be at the tournament, including:  Indiana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, North Texas, Portland, USC and Miami (Ohio). The Tigers could also face off against players from this year’s Milwaukee Classic wildcard teams— Navy, Marquette and Wisconsin.

The Tigers enter the contest with a clean 2-0 start to the season. Mizzou swept UT Martin in a dual match competition last Saturday, 7-0, 5-0. Romary Cardenas and Valentina Vazques clinched a doubles point for the team, as well as Ellie Wright and Romary Cardenas. In singles play, Valentina Vazquez and Gabriela Martinez secured the two match victories.
