COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Missouri tennis team added three student-athletes, Christine Canete, Mae Canete and Laura Masic, to its 2022-23 roster, Head Coach Chris Wootton announced Wednesday.

Both Christine and Mae Canete join the Tigers from Central Oklahoma while Masic transferred to Mizzou after two seasons at Indiana.

MAE CANETE (Los Angeles, California / Venice / Central Oklahoma)
Mae Canete finished off the 2022 season with her second-straight All-America honors, after also earning them in 2021. She ended the season ranked No. 3 in the ITA Singles after posting a 22-2 record. Her only losses came to the No. 1 rated DII and Juco player. Canete helped Central Oklahoma to a National Runner-Up finish in 2022, the best in school history. She also finished as the D2 ITA National Singles Runner-Up.

“We are honored to have Mae join our team this fall,” said Wootton. “She is one of the best players in Division II tennis and will be a vital part of our future. Mae gives us experience and leadership that will be integral over the next two years. We are excited that she has chosen Mizzou to take her next step.”

In 2021, Canete earned her first All-America honors in singles and doubles before being named the ITA DII Rookie of the Year. After going undefeated in singles as a freshman with a 22-0 record, she ended the year ranked No. 5 nationally in singles and No. 15 in doubles.

CHRISTINE CANETE (Los Angeles, California / Venice / Central Oklahoma)
Christine Canete, who also goes by Inah, joins the Tigers after a dominating freshman season at Central Oklahoma. Canete was one of four freshman nationally to earn DII All-America honors after posting a 19-2 record. She finished her freshman season ranked No. 8 in the ITA Singles Top 25 and earned ITA Central Region Freshman of the Year. Canete was also the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Freshman of the Year.

“Inah is an exciting addition to our Mizzou tennis family,” said Wootton. “The future is bright for her development in Division 1 tennis. We expect big things from Inah and are ecstatic to watch her climb to college tennis prominence. She joins her older sisters as the No. 1 doubles pair in Division 2 and gives us lots of depth and epxierence at the top of our singles and double lineup.”

The Canete sisters also earned Doubles All-America honors in 2022, after dominating the season with a 22-2 doubles record. They finished the year as the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the country and won the 2021 ITA Doubles National Championship.

LAURA MASIC (Dakovo, Croatia / Indiana)
Laura Masic comes to Columbia following two successful seasons at Indiana where she earned 12 singles wins in 2021-22. Masic won the Ohio Valley ITA Regional Doubles Championship and qualified for a spot in the ITA National Fall Championship. A native of Dakovo, Croatia, Masic reached the No. 1 junior ranking in Croatia in every age group and played as a regular member of the national team. She was won six singles national championships and several ITF and ETA tournaments.

“Laura is going to be an essential piece to Mizzou tennis success over the next two years,” said Wootton. “Her experience playing at the top of the lineup in a Power 5 conference will give us a level of experience and stability that is priceless. Laura wants to be great in life and in tennis and we’re honored to have her join our family. Mizzou is the perfect place for her to continue developing and translate her talent to results.”
