Mizzou Opens Play at 2022 SEC Tournament

TAMPA, Fla. — The University of Missouri men’s basketball team heads south to Tampa, Fla. for the 2022 SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament, hosted at Amalie Arena. The Tigers’ open the tournament as the No. 12 seed, and will face off in the first round against 13th-seeded Ole Miss, Wednesday, March 9 at 5 p.m. CT.

Mizzou’s opening game will be broadcast on SEC Network with Tom Hart and Daymeon Fishback on the call. The game will also be available on SEC Radio and Tiger Radio Network. Mike Kelly and Chris Gervino will have the Tiger Radio Network call.

MIZZOU HEADLINES

  • Kobe Brown was named Second-Team All-SEC, as announced by the league Tuesday morning.
  • The junior finished the regular-season fifth in the SEC in rebounds per game (7.8) and top-20 in scoring (12.6).
  • Missouri has held SEC opponents to 43.2 percent from the field, ranking sixth in the SEC in field goal percentage defense, behind the likes of Auburn, Arkansas, LSU, Tennessee and Kentucky.
  • Javon Pickett extended his double-digit scoring streak to 15-straight conference games (Pickett missed a majority of the Iowa State game due to injury).
  • The senior ranks 17th in conference scoring and 11th in field goal percentage, shooting at a 44.8 percent clip.
  • Trevon Brazile recorded four blocks Saturday against Georgia, as the freshman reached 43 on the season.
  • Brazile currently ranks eighth nationally in total blocks among freshman, and is second in the SEC for blocks per game in conference play. His 1.72 blocks per game in SEC play rank behind only SEC Defensive Player of the Year, Walker Kessler.
  • Mizzou’s strength of schedule ranks 12th in the nation and third in the SEC. The Tigers’ are tied with Alabama for the most games against Q1 and Q2 opponents in the conference.
  • Missouri is 11-2 this season when outrebounding its opponents, doing so in every win this season.

MIZZOU IN THE SEC TOURNAMENT

  • Since moving to the SEC in 2012-13, Mizzou is 5-7 in the SEC Tournament.
  • The Tigers have reached the quarterfinals four times, including last season after defeating Georgia, 73-70, in the second round.
  • In the SEC Tournament, Mizzou is 2-0 in overtime games and 3-3 in games decided by single digits.
  • A win Tuesday would advance Missouri to the quarterfinals for the third-straight tournament (the 2020 tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

THE SERIES

  • Saturday is the third meeting this season between Mizzou and Ole Miss, with the Tigers taking both previous games.
  • Mizzou’s win earlier this season in Oxford was the third-largest SEC win of all-time for the Tigers, and was backed by a school record 10-for-10 performance by Amari Davis.
  • Ole Miss still leads the all-time series, 15-5, but four of Mizzou’s all-time wins against the Rebels have come under head coach Cuonzo Martin.
  • Mizzou has faced Ole Miss twice in the SEC Tournament, with the Rebels taking both of the previous meetings.

SCOUTING OLE MISS

  • Ole Miss is led by Nysier Brooks who ranks top-five in the SEC in blocks per game, offensive rebounds per game and total rebounds.  
  • Brooks averaged 7.5 points, eight rebounds and 1.5 blocks in the two meetings against Missouri earlier this season.
  • With several injuries affecting the Rebels lineup, Matthew Murrell has come on strong for Ole Miss. Murrell, who averages 11.9 points per game on the season, recorded back-to-back 20-point games against Texas A&M and Kentucky. He ranks second in the conference in three-point shooting in SEC play.
  • Ole Miss has dropped its last four contests heading into the SEC Tournament, with its last win coming Feb. 19 against Georgia.
  • The Rebels have wins this season against LSU, Kansas State, Florida, Mississippi State, Memphis and Dayton.
