Men’s Golf Set for Alumni Challenge

The Missouri men’s golf team returns to action for the first time in the spring season, competing at the Black and Gold Alumni Challenge.

COURSE INFO
The Tigers will compete on two courses during their alumni challenge – both of which will also serve as previews for the team’s spring season.

Mizzou is set for action at Colleton River Golf Course in Beaufort, South Carolina – site of the Colleton River Collegiate on March 6-7. The Tigers will also take on the Bulls Bay Golf Club where it claimed the title one year ago at The Hootie at Bulls Bay and will look to defend their crown this year March 26-28.

QUOTABLES
Coach Mark Leroux: “With the younger guys that we have and the guys that are in the lineup as true freshmen, that certainly makes the future look really bright. If we can continue to improve this spring, compete, and then continue to recruit guys to come into the lineup as freshmen. That’s really going to help in the long run for this program.

Coach Mark Hankins: “The Alumni Challenge is a great opportunity for us to, number one, meet up with some alumni and create good will there. But also to have our guys play competitively on golf courses that are well maintained that represent tournament-style golf courses. We also can try to identify who our best five are going into the spring season so we can start our first tournament off right.”

Alfons Bondesson: “Over the winter, we have a great opportunity to go out and putt, chip, hit wedges. Where I’m from, I usually hit balls against a mat for four months, so it’s great. I get to play more, practice more, putt more, so it changes my practice schedule.”

Tommy Boone: “It’s certainly important to make sure we’ve got the right guys in the lineup, the guys that are playing the best golf at the moment. I think we’re looking forward to getting some warmer weather, getting to see the golf course ahead of time and figure out what we need to work on.”

Charlie Crockett: “The weather here (in Columbia) this winter has been quite good. So, we’ve been able to get a lot of rounds in and a lot of practice in. The putting surfaces and course have been great. We’ve managed to keep grinding and kept up with our normal routine from the fall. We’ve also made a really good effort to stay healthy and stay in shape and we’re ready to get back out there.”

Jack Lundin: “For the team, there were a couple guys that were new to college golf in the fall, so I think that experience was eye-opening for them and will only be good in the spring. In all honesty, competing for a spot on the team is sometimes more nerve wracking than tournament play. We play harder, we play every day with each other, and we always want to beat each other. So going out there is always a good time.”

Dawson Meek: “Everyone on our team is so solid that it’s a battle to even make it to a tournament. It’s good for our team because it lets everybody know where we’re at. It’s always good to have good competition outside of playing at tournaments. So, I think it just makes us more prepared and ready for the season ahead.”

Dagbjartur Sigurbrandsson: “I’m really excited to go to South Carolina and play with the guys and see the courses we’re going to play. We’ve been working hard and it’s exciting. We have really good players on the team, you need to play great to make the team and that’s my goal.”

DJ Springer: “We’re going to play two courses that we’re going to be playing here in the spring season. So, just to be able to get that extra one or two practice on top of the practice rounds that we will get before the tournament is huge. I’m sure it will give us a leg-up on the competition.”
