The Missouri men’s golf team finished seventh of 14 schools during the three-round stroke play of the SEC Championship, earning one of eight bids to Saturday’s quarterfinals.
The Tigers posted a two-over 282 during Friday’s third-round action to finish even par over 54 holes. The team’s tally of 840 is its second best at the SEC Championship, falling just one stroke shy of last year’s 839 total.
In a field that features 12 schools ranked among the nation’s top 50 and seven in the top 20, Mizzou qualified for the SEC Quarterfinals for the third time since the format was adopted in 2017 and the second-straight season overall. To earn the seven seed, the No. 43 Tigers finished ahead of five schools ahead of them in the rankings, including two top-20 programs.
Charlie Crockett and Alfons Bondesson led the Tigers by placing eighth overall with a three-under 207 during the three-round stroke play. The duo’s eighth-place finish is the best in school history at the SEC Championship as Emilio Cuartero is the only other Tiger to place in the top 10 in the school’s 11 years in the conference, finishing ninth in 2014.
Bondesson carded a one-under 69 for his final three-under tally (68-70-69), finishing as the second-best freshman at the conference championship. The rookie used a clean scorecard to move up nine spots during the third round with just one bogey and two birdies. Crockett added a one-over 71 to also finish with the best individual result by a Tiger at the SEC Championship at three-under (70-66-71).
Junior Jack Lundin was just one stroke behind his teammates to post the fourth-best result by a Tiger at the tournament, finishing 13th with a two-under 208 (68-69-71). DJ Springer was 58th with a total of 290 (75-72-73), while Antonio Safa placed 61st at 291 (76-74-71).
The Tigers now advance to play second-seeded and 15th-ranked Texas A&M on Saturday morning with a 7 a.m. tee time. Mizzou is aiming for its first semifinal appearance at the tournament with a 1 p.m. tee time later on Saturday afternoon.
