Men’s Basketball Drops Road Contest at Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. — In the opening game of back-to-back contests against Mississippi State, the University of Missouri men’s basketball team couldn’t hold off the Bulldogs at home. Mississippi State took the contest, 68-49, as the Tigers’ will prep for the quick turnaround to face them once again Sunday. 

Ronnie DeGray III lead the team with 13 points, which included 5-of-6 at the free-throw line. DeGray also contributed five rebounds and a steal. Javon Pickett joined him in double-digits, with 11 points that included a pair of three-pointers.

TURNING POINT 

Mizzou came out strong after halftime, edging Mississippi State’s lead to seven on two separate occasions, including four straight made free throws and a three-pointer by Jarron Coleman. The Bulldogs continued to have an answer for the Tigers’ though, with back-to-back layups to keep the lead in double-digits, 45-34.

GAME NOTES

  • Pickett has recorded double-digit scoring effort in 10-straight SEC games. 
  • DeGray III made his first SEC start, and first start for Missouri since Dec. 7 against Eastern Illinois. 
  • With his 13, DeGray III has recorded double-digits in two of his last three games. 
  • Trevon Brazile led Mizzou and tied a career-high rebounds with eight for the second-straight game. 
  • With his block in the first half, Trevon Brazile took sole possession of fourth on the Mizzou freshman single-season block list. He now has 36 this season through 17 games. 
  • Coleman tied a career-high three steals, marking the third time this season he has done so.
  • As a team, Mizzou assisted on 63 percent of its field goals. Seven Tigers had at least one assists. 
  • Mizzou shot 87.5 percent as a team from the free throw line, going 14-of-16 for its second-highest percentage of the season. 
  • Mississippi State leads the all-time series 11-6 as the last seven-straight contests have been in Starkville. 

UP NEXT

Mississippi State makes the return trip to Columbia on Sunday, Feb. 20. The game is set for a 7 p.m. tip on SEC Network.
