J’den Cox Wins Silver Medal at 2022 World Championships

BELGRADE, Serbia – Former University of Missouri standout wrestler J’Den Cox earned a silver medal at 92 kg at the 2022 World Championships Saturday, Sept. 17.

Cox reached the semifinals with back-to-back shutout technical falls, 10-0 and 11-0 against opponents from China and Poland, respectively. In the semifinals, he went on to face Osman Nurmagomedov of Azerbaijan, the gold medal winner at the 2021 U23 Worlds. The Columbia, Mo. native ended up defeating Nurmagomedov 7-0 after a second period that saw him in complete control, getting two takedowns and an exposure.

In the finals, Cox faced Kamran Ghasempour of Iran. Ghasempour previously beat Cox in a 3-3 criteria decision in the semifinals of the 2021 World Championships. The former Tiger was edged, 2-0, after Ghasempour was put on the clock and secured a takedown.

Cox won World titles in 2018 and 2019, as well as World bronze medals in 2017 and 2021, and was an Olympic bronze medalist in 2016. He was also a three-time NCAA champion at Mizzou and is tied for second all-time with 136 wins.
