Hynes Lifts Cougars Past Division II Truman State

Kirksville, Mo. – Luke Hynes had a goal and an assist to lead the No. 14-ranked Columbia College men’s soccer team to a 2-0 win at NCAA Division II Truman State University Sunday in Kirksville, Mo.
 
Columbia remained unbeaten at 2-0-1, while Truman State dropped its season opener and is 0-1.
 
The Cougars struck first in the 14th minute after Rece Gilmore sent a cross into the box that Hynes finished with a shot to the near corner to make it 1-0. The goal for Hynes was his first of the season and third of his career.
 
Columbia outshot Truman State 7-5 in the opening 45 minutes of play, putting four shots on frame. Caden Hof made two saves in the first half for the Cougars.
 
Caden McLagan nearly made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute after he was left open in the box off a corner, but his header went wide left.
 
Just four minutes later, it was Simon Gansner who found the back of the net on a break-away after a short corner by Truman State was sniffed out by the Cougars. Hynes was credited with the assist after playing a long ball to Ganser who beat the Truman goalie who was retreating after the corner kick. The goal for Ganser was the first of his career.
 
Hof kept it a two-goal game in the 64th minute after Jack Knust’s shot was deflected over the crossbar for a corner kick.
 
Columbia outshot Truman State 15-13, while the Bulldogs had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Hof made a career five saves and picked up his second shutout of the season.
 
The Cougars play at Grandview University on Sept. 6 at 4 p.m. in Des Moines, Iowa.
 
NOTES: Truman State leads the all-time series 6-5-3, but Columbia has won the last two meetings … The Cougars scored first for the third-straight game … The game-winning goal for Hynes was the first of his career.
