Horstman and Miller Lift Cougars Past Harris-Stowe

St. Louis, Mo. – DeLaney Horstman and Lexi Miller each scored 21 points to lead the Columbia College women’s basketball team to an 87-72 win at Harris-Stowe University Thursday in St. Louis. The 21 points for Miller was a career-high.
 
Columbia won its fifth-straight game to improve to 23-4 (15-2 AMC), while Harris-Stowe dropped its 15th-consecutive contest and fell to 3-22 (1-16 AMC). The Cougars remain in a tie for first place in the AMC standings.
 
Mallory Shetley added 14 points for the Cougars, who shot 43.8 percent (35-80) from the field and had a season-low two turnovers. Columbia also hit 10 threes and had 22 assists in the victory.
 
Harris-Stowe opened the game hitting 10-of-11 from the field and led 24-21 with 2:45 left in the first. The Cougars closed out the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 30-24 advantage. Miller led the Cougars with seven points. Harris-Stowe shot 10-of-12 (83.3 percent) from the field in the quarter.
 
Columbia scored the first four points of the second quarter to extend the run to 13-0 and push the advantage to 34-24. The lead grew for the Cougars to 50-35 on a three from the corner by Madison Weydert, and took a 52-36 lead to half. Columbia limited Harris-Stowe to 4-of-12 shooting in the second quarter and outscored the Hornets 22-12.
 
Miller had 12 points to lead the Cougars, who shot 47.7 percent (21-44) from the field and hit seven threes in the first half. Allison Stiers filled up the stat sheet with five points, five assists and five rebounds.
 
The lead grew to 20 (58-38) on a jumper by Shetley, but the Hornets clawed back with a 6-0 run to trim the lead to 64-49. Horstman had 12 points in the third quarter and scored the final two buckets in the last 55 seconds to make it 75-53 after three. 
 
Miller put the game out of reach with back-to-back three threes in the fourth to extend the lead to 85-62.
 
Samara Swire (22 points) and Autumn Brown (15) and Toree Jackson (11) all scored in double figures for Harris-Stowe, who shot 54.7 percent (29-53) in the loss.
 
The Cougars close out regular-season play at Cottey College on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m.
 
NOTES: Columbia has won 15-straight meetings against Harris-Stowe and leads the all-time series 46-5 … The Cougars have won 23 or more games in 14 of the last 16 seasons.
