Honnold Named to USA Softball WNT Set to Compete in Japan

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Missouri softball junior center fielder Alex Honnold was named to the USA Softball Women’s National Team (WNT) roster that will compete at the 2023 Japan All-Star Series.

Honnold is one of 16 current collegiate student-athletes from 12 NCAA Division I universities and five athletic conferences selected to the team. The roster also features five student-athletes from the Southeastern Conference.

Slated to take place August 4-7, Honnold and the USA WNT will go head-to-head with world-ranked No. 2 Japan in a three-game series held across three cities in Japan – Fukushima (Azuma Stadium – Tokyo Olympic Games softball venue), Iwakuni (Kizuma Stadium – host of WNT pre-Olympic training) and Yokohama (Yokohama Stadium – Tokyo Olympic Games softball venue).

Honnold, a West Des Moines, Iowa, native, earned 2023 NFCA All-American honors after she led Mizzou and ranked in the top six in the SEC for on-base percentage (.539, fourth in the SEC, 12th in the NCAA), slugging percentage (.779, fifth in the SEC, 20th in the NCAA), runs (52, fifth in the SEC), batting average (.396, sixth in the SEC) and triples (three, sixth in the SEC). Honnold was also fourth in the SEC with 44 walks.

Her .779 slugging percentage in 2023 ranks fourth all-time in Mizzou program history. Honnold also ranks tied for third in the Missouri record books with 44 walks.

A 2023 All-SEC Second Team performer, Honnold ranked 10th in conference play with a .443 on-base percentage. She hit .290 in SEC games with four home runs, two doubles, 14 runs, and 10 RBI to go with a .493 slugging percentage.

In 2023, she registered 19 multi-hit games (second on MU) and blasted 14 home runs (ninth in the SEC). Honnold tallied 11 doubles (fourth on Mizzou) and paced the Tigers with 11 multi-RBI games and 49 RBI (11th in the SEC).

She notched a 17-game reached-base streak and 11-game hitting streak in 2023. Honnold also grabbed 20 stolen bases (seventh in the SEC) to go with 61 hits (11th in the SEC).

In the field, she registered a .989 fielding percentage with 91 putouts.

Honnold compiled three hits, five times in 2023 including a two-home run outing with a career-best five RBI (3-for-4 hitting) at Florida on March 17.

She batted .333 at the 2023 SEC Tournament May 9-10 with two RBI, a run and a double.

Honnold also opened the 2023 NCAA Norman Regional, knocking three RBI and a homer against California on May 19.

She went 9-for-14 with a pair of home runs and 10 RBI over Mizzou’s non-conference trip to Florida (Feb. 14-19) for SEC Co-Player of the Week honors. In six games, Honnold slashed .643/.762/1.357 with six extra-base hits to lead the Tigers to a 6-0 record across the week, winning a midweek matchup at No. 20 UCF and securing the 2023 FIU Panther Invitational.

Honnold most recently participated in USA Softball’s Women’s Fast Pitch Camp in Vero Beach, Florida, June 13-14.
