Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College Athletics department has announced Damon Helgevold as the school’s second Head Bowling Coach.

“We are so excited to add Coach Helgevold to our CC family,” said James Arnold, Director of Athletics. “During the interview process, Damon’s passion for the sport stood out, and I’m confident he’ll do an excellent job taking our program to the next step.”

Helgevold, a native of Osceola, Iowa, comes to Columbia College after serving as the Assistant Bowling Coach at Clarke Community High School. While on staff, he helped a girl’s squad qualify for the state tournament for the first time in six seasons.

“I’m excited to join a great group at Columbia College,” said Helgevold. “First and foremost, I want to thank AD James Arnold and staff for giving me this opportunity. Secondly, I’d like to thank my family and friends for the support.”

While coaching bowling at Clarke Community High School, Helgevold worked for KSIB Radio Station, where he was the Sports Director and was the play-by-play broadcaster for ten high school teams and one local college.

Helgevold was a four-year letter winner at Clarke High School, where he was a two-time state Qualifier (2012 and 2015), held the highest team average three times, and was a four-time All-District Bowler being named District Bowler of the Year twice.

Helgevold bowled at Waldorf University in Forest City, Iowa, where he was a three-time United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Team Sectionals Qualifier and a three-time USBC All-Academic Award winner.

“Bowling has been a passion of mine for a very long time,” said Helgevold. “I’ve been bowling in some capacity since I was three years old. I was lucky enough to have a successful high school and college bowing career, and now I am excited to lead this group of young athletes and continue the program’s success since its beginning. I hope to bring some knowledge I gained during my time as an athlete and help our program take the next step.”

Helgevold will begin on Monday, Aug. 9.
