Day 1 Recap | U.S. Olympic Team Trials — Track & Field

MizzouMade Karissa Schweizer at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials

EUGENE, Ore. — One current and two former Mizzou athletes advanced to respective event finals Friday on the first day of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials — Track & Field at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Junior Arianna Fisher claimed one of the final qualifying spots in the women’s triple jump with a distance of 13.15m. She is one of seven collegians to make the final in the event. The World Athletics Olympic qualifying standard for the event is 14.32m.

Karissa Schweizer will run in the women’s 5,000m final on Monday night after finishing sixth overall in the preliminary race. Her time of 15:32.63 is 22 seconds off the qualifying standard. Schweizer’s personal best in the event is 14:26.34.

Volunteer coach Gabi Jacobs advanced to the final round of qualifying in the women’s discus Friday, finishing fifth at 59.55m. She will have to throw at least 63.50m to meet the qualifying standard.

The Olympic team takes just three athletes per event, all of whom need to additionally meet the qualifying standards set by the World Athletics Council.

Alum and volunteer coach Avery Carter also competed on the first day of trials. He competed in the men’s hammer throw, finishing 22nd overall in the preliminary round.
