Cougars Win AMC Opener over Williams Baptist

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College men’s basketball team limited visiting Williams Baptist to 27.6 percent shooting in a 76-47 American Midwest Conference opening win Thursday at Southwell Complex. The 47 points allowed by Columbia was a season low.
 
Trendon Tisdale led the Cougars with a season-high 19 points and seven rebounds, while Tony Burks (16) and Carson Parker (14) also scored in double figures.
 
The Cougars shot 48.3 percent (29-60) from the field and had a 52-12 advantage in points in the paint. Columbia also outrebounded Williams Baptist 49-31.
 
The Cougars improved to 5-2 (1-0 AMC) with the win, while Williams Baptist suffered its first loss of the season and dropped to 3-1 (0-1 AMC).
 
Columbia held an early 5-2 lead after the Eagles missed its first three shots from the field, and the Cougars lead grew to doubles figures (21-11) with 9:08 to play on a lay-up by Parker. Columbia hit 5-of-6 field goals in a span on of 4:04 to gain the double-digit advantage.
 
The Cougars went four minutes without a bucket and the Eagles closed the gap to six (21-15), but a 10-0 run to end the half gave CC a 35-19 halftime advantage. Williams Baptist did not score in the final 3:14 of the half.
 
Columbia shot 50.0 percent (14-28) from the field in the first half and limited Williams Baptist to 23.5 percent (8-34). Tisdale led the Cougars with 10 first-half points on a pair of threes.
 
Columbia put together an 8-0 run midway through the second half to gain a commanding 51-27 lead with 14:14 to play.
 
Ben Keton had 13 points for Williams Baptist, which had 17 turnovers in the loss.
 
Columbia has won six-straight games against Williams Baptist and leads the all-time series 42-6.
 
The Cougars take travel to William Penn University on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 4 p.m. in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
