St. Louis, Mo. – Columbia College Women’s Basketball traveled to the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy to take on the Eutectics in American Midwest Conference action tonight. A huge third quarter from UHSP put the Eutectics up big and Columbia was unable to comeback from the deficit, falling 63-88. The Cougars move to 12-4 overall and 7-2 in AMC play.

Peyton Crowe led the Cougars with 15 points. Lexi Miller followed with 12 points, and DeLaney Horstman finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

The Cougars got on the board first as Hannah Ferguson sunk a jumper from midrange. Both teams traded baskets from there until an and-one from Lexi Miller put the Cougars up one, 10-9. Mallory Shetley scored on a layup and Columbia led 15-12, but UHSP would end the quarter on a 5-0 scoring run to lead at the end of the first, 17-15.

UHSP kept the momentum early in the second as they extended their lead to 26-21. Tough defense from the Eutectics made it tough for Columbia to get the ball inside, but a pass from Mallory Shetley found DeLaney Horstman under the basket where she was able to convert, cutting the UHSP lead to three, 23-26. Reigning AMC Player of the Year Grace Beyer continued to score for the Eutectics as they opened a 31-23 lead, forcing a timeout from Columbia. Peyton Crowe and Sydney Reddin scored the last points for Columbia as they headed into halftime trailing UHSP 27-33.

Beyer scored a quick six-points to start the third quarter and extend the UHSP lead to 39-27, but a three-pointer from Abby Backes stopped the run. Another three-point play from UHSP followed by a turnover from the Cougars prompted an early timeout from Columbia. The Cougars continued to struggle on offense as UHSP pushed to a 16-point lead at 48-32. Another timeout from Columbia looked to slow down the Eutectics. Peyton Crowe scored five, but UHSP and Columbia went basket-for-basket as the Eutectics took a 57-37 lead with under three minutes to play in the third. At the end of the third, Columbia trailed 41-67.

Mallory Shetley opened the fourth quarter with five points for Columbia, cutting the lead to 46-77. Two made free throws from Peyton Crowe and a good jump shot from DeLaney Horstman made it 50-77, drawing a timeout from the UHSP bench. A good three-pointer from Lexi Miller brought the Cougars to within 24, 55-79, but that is as close as they would get as UHSP claimed the win over Columbia, 88-63.
