Cougars Top No. 13 Vikings on Road

Marshall, Mo. – The No. 12-ranked Columbia College women’s soccer team scored a pair of goals in the opening 16 minutes of play en route to a 3-0 victory at No. 13 Missouri Valley College in a battle of top-15 teams Tuesday in Marshall, Mo.
 
Columbia improved to 2-0 with the win, while Missouri Valley dropped to 0-3-1. The Cougars are off to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 2020-21 season.
 
Natalie Allison made a career-high three saves recording the Cougars second clean sheet of the season.
 
The Cougars struck first off a corner kick in the fourth minute after Jewel Morelan buried home a cross from Emilia Zolesio Fernandez Blanco to make it 1-0. The goal for Morelan was her first of the season and 45th of her career.
 
Delfina Zolesio Fernandez Blanco pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 16th minute when her corner kick curled into the net for her first goal of the season. Columbia outshot Missouri 3-2 in the opening 45 minutes of play and Allison made a pair of saves.
 
Macie Lucas added an insurance goal in the 67th after taking a pass from Delfina Zolesio Fernandez Blanco and beat a few defenders and the goalkeeper for the tally. The goal for Lucas was her first of the season and 24th of her career.
 
Columbia outshot Missouri Valley 6-4 and had a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
 
The Cougars travel to Benedictine (Kan.) on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 5 p.m.
 
NOTES: Columbia leads the all-time series with Missouri Valley 5-4-1 … The Cougars have allowed just two corner kicks in two games this season.
