Cougars Three-Point Attack Keys Victory Over Lyon

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women’s basketball team celebrated Faculty Appreciation Night by tying a season-high with 14 three-pointers in an 80-59 win over Lyon College Thursday at Southwell Complex. 
 
The victory upped Columbia’s record to 10-1 this season at home.
 
Mackenzie Hess scored a season-high 16 points on four three-pointers, while Lexi Miller (15 points), Abby Backes (13) and Peyton Crowe (11) also scored in double figures.  The Cougars limited Lyon to 31.0 percent (22-71) shooting from the field, and outrebounded the Scots 54-42.
 
Columbia won its fourth-straight game to improve to 16-4 (11-2 AMC), while Lyon suffered its third-straight defeat and fell to 7-10 (6-7 AMC). The Cougars remain in a tie for second place in the AMC standings.
 
The Cougars jumped out to an early 9-2 advantage and led 21-17 after the first quarter behind six three-pointers. Mya Miller’s bucket with 1:25 left in the first ignited a 9-0 run by to extend the advantage to double figures (28-17) with 7:02 to play before half. 
 
Hess led Columbia with nine first-half points on three from beyond the arc as the Cougars led 41-33 at the break.
 
A 9-2 run to start the third quarter pushed the Columbia lead to 50-35, and the advantage grew to 21 (58-37) on a triple by Backes with 4:24 left to play in the third. The Cougars hit four threes in the third quarter to take a commanding 60-45 lead.
 
Lyon cut the lead to 62-50 with 6:51 to play, but the Cougars put the game out of reach with a 14-1 run.
 
Savanna Lopez (19) and Paige Tate (18) combined to score 37 of 59 points for the Scots.
 
Columbia leads the all-time series 31-15 and has won the last three meetings.
 
The Cougars host Central Baptist College on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m.
