Cougars Fall on Buzzer-Beater

Batesville, Ark. – The Columbia College women’s basketball team saw their seven-game win streak end as Lyon (Ark.) defeated the Cougars, 73-71.
 
The two teams are now tied for at the top of the American Midwest Conference (AMC) standings with a 9-1 record. Columbia is 16-5 overall, while Lyon moves to 17-4.
 
In the first quarter, a 9-2 run gave Columbia an 18-9 lead with 2:36 left in the opening frame. The Scots closed within two points (18-16), but a triple from Abby Backes gave the Cougars a 21-16 advantage at the end of the quarter.
 
The Cougars came out in the second quarter scoring the first 10-points, highlighted by three 3-point field goals. Columbia’s lead would grow to as many as 16 (35-19), with 4:34 left in the half. A Peyton Crowe jump shot with 2-seconds left gave the Cougars a double-digit advantage heading into the halftime break (42-32).
 
The Scots quickly cut their deficit to five points (45-40) with 6:39 left in the third. The two teams would trade buckets before Lyon would tie the game at 52-52. DeLaney Horstman was open and made a layup giving the Cougars a 54-52 lead going into the final period.
 
Lyon took their first lead, since the first quarter, with 3:28 left on a deep ball. The Scots would not trail the rest of the game. Peyton Crowe drove the lane with Lyon leading 68-71 and made the layup while getting fouled. Crowe knocked down the free throw to tie the game with 1:18 remaining. After a defensive stop by both teams, Lyon had the ball for the last possession, and Katie Turner made a jump shot just outside the lane as time expired to give Lyon the 73-71 win.
