Cougars Defeat Wildcats on the Road; Possail Notches 100th Career Win

Canton, Mo. – The Columbia College women’s basketball improved to 3-2 on the season with a 67-52 road win over Culver-Stockton (Mo.) (2-1). The win gave CC head coach Taylor Possail 100 for his career. 

The Cougars jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead thanks to seven points by Peyton Crowe. Columbia’s lead reached double figures for the first time at the 3:16 mark as Mallory Shetley drained a basket from distance. The Cougars led 21-10 at the end of the first quarter. 

The Wildcats recorded the first basket of the new quarter, but the Cougars responded with the following nine points to extend the lead to 18 points (30-12). With 4:43 left in the period, Allison Stiers knocked down her second triple of the quarter, which gave CC its first 20-point-plus lead at 35-14. CC would lead at the intermission, 40-23. 

Culver-Stockton came roaring back in the third stanza, trimming CC’s lead down to six (44-38) with 3:06 remaining in the period, but back-to-back buckets from Abby Backes and Crowe got the lead back to double figures. The Wildcats responded with a 3-point field goal, which was quickly followed by a triple from Mackenzie Dubbert to give CC a 51-41 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes. 

After the Wildcats got the lead back down to seven (53-46) with 8:37 remaining, Mallory Shetley made a jumper followed by a layup to extend the lead back to double digits. The lead would stay over ten for the remainder of the contest. 

Key Moment:

The Wildcats appeared to have all the moment heading into the final period, but a Mackenzie Dubbert triple with 54-seconds remaining gave the Cougars a double-digit lead.
