Cougars Defeat Tigers for Win No. 7

WBB vs. Iowa Wesleyan

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women’s basketball team defeated the Tigers of Iowa Wesleyan, 67-60, on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars improve to 7-3 on the season and have won five times in their last six games. Iowa Wesleyan falls to 6-2.
 
The Cougars raced out to a 10-4 lead after a Clare Shetley layup with 5:21 left in the first period. CC led for the rest of the quarter, including a period high of seven points (16-9) with 2:13 remaining. At the end of quarter No. 1, the Cougars held on to an 18-16 advantage.
 
After Iowa Wesleyan tied the game at 18-18 at the start of the second, the Cougars responded with a 9-1 run and led 27-19 at the midway point of the first half. CC maintained at least a five-point lead the rest of the quarter and took a 34-27 lead into the locker room.
 
Columbia never trailed in the third quarter, leading by at least four points the entire way. The Cougars ended the quarter on a 10-2 run, capped off by an old-fashioned three-point play by Mallory Sheltey to take a 51-38 lead into the final period.
 
A free throw from Clare Shetley gave the Cougars a game-high 17-point lead at 57-40 with 8:47 left. Iowa Wesleyan did not go quietly as they went on a 15-2 run to close the gap to four points (59-55) with 1:12 remaining, but the Cougars held on for the 67-60 win.  
 
Key Moment:
After the Tigers cut their deficit to four points (59-55) with 1:12 remaining, Clare Shetley made a layup to put CC ahead by six points.
 
By the Numbers:
14-12 – Clare Shetley recorded her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. 
4 – CC had four players score at least 10 points
16 – The Cougars dished out 16 assists on 25 made field goals
13-14 – Columbia made the most out of their free throw opportunities, missing just one on 14 attempts.
