Cougars Complete Season Sweep Over Comets

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College Women’s Basketball team played host to the Comets of Cottey College tonight in American Midwest Conference action. After winning on the road in December over the Comets, the Cougars won again, this time at home, to complete the season sweep over the AMC newcomers Cottey College. With the win, the Cougars improved to 18-4 overall and 13-2 in AMC play, while the Comets fall to 9-13 overall and 5-10 in the AMC. 

Columbia shot for 50% from the field in the first quarter to take a 23-14 lead after 10 minutes of play. Hannah Ferguson went for six points in the second quarter, going 3-3 from the field, and Columbia led 39-26 at the half. 

Mackenzie Hess and Allison Stiers each made two three-pointers in the third as Columbia extended its lead to 62-40 heading into the fourth quarter. The Cougars closed out the game by holding the Comets to just 29% shooting from the field, rolling to a 75-51 win. 

Four different players finished with double-digit points, led by Mallory Shetley with 15 points and eight rebounds. Hannah Ferguson followed closely with 13 points and eight rebounds. Both Mackenzie Hess and Lexi Miller went for 11 points each. Abby Backes chipped in six points, six rebounds, and nine assists. 

The Cougars return to action this Saturday when they host the Spartans of Missouri Baptist University. The day also honors the seniors on the team in Hannah Ferguson and Allison Stiers.
