Cougars Beat Mustangs, Split Season Series

Columbia, Mo – Columbia College Men’s Basketball was back in action today as they hosted the Mustangs of Central Baptist College. After dropping their December matchup to the Mustangs by just three points, the Cougars battled hard through a physical contest today and worked to a 71-61 win. With the win, the Cougars improve to 17-6 overall and 9-2 in the American Midwest Conference. In AMC standings, the Cougars stand alone in first place above Missouri Baptist in second and Central Baptist in third. 

The first half saw back and forth action with Columbia taking an early five point lead after a good layup from Marlon Allen, 12-7. A timeout from CBC halted Columbia’s momentum as the Mustangs used a scoring-run of their own to take a quick 13-12 lead. From there, both teams traded made baskets until a good layup from Trendon Tisdale put the Cougars up five, 25-20. With just 13 seconds to play in the half, CBC scored from beyond the arc, cutting CC’s lead to 25-23 heading into halftime. 

The Cougars scored fast in the second half with made baskets from Collin Parker and Tony Burks to jump out to a 37-27 lead. The final eight minutes saw the Cougars at the foul line where they converted on 14 made free throws. Columbia held their largest lead of the game at 66-48 with under four minutes to play. The final four points scored from CC were all from the foul line. 

Tony Burks finished with a game-high 25 points to go along with six rebounds. Collin Parker followed closely with 22 points and five rebounds. Marlon Allen pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, and Carson Parker handed out three assists. 

Columbia will have a week off before their next contest when Missouri Baptist comes to town next Saturday for another AMC contest inside the Arena of Southwell Complex.
