Comeback Falls Short in Finale at No. 22 LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. – No. 22 LSU held off a late Mizzou rally to take an 8-6 win in the series finale at Alex Box Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Mizzou (22-15, 5-13 SEC) jumped to a 2-0 lead on the strength of a Trevor Austin two-run home run in the first. Austin would finish 2-for-4 at the plate with four RBI to lead the Tigers. Ty Wilmsmeyer added a 2-for-4 day with a run scored.

LSU (27-12, 10-8 SEC) scored six times across the third, fourth and fifth innings to take control of the series finale. Mizzou threatened in the eighth, plating three runs to close within 7-6 but left the bases loaded. LSU would tack on an insurance run in its half of the eighth for the final 8-6 score line.

IMPACT INNING

After tying the game in the bottom of the third, LSU scored three times in the fourth to take the lead. Tre’ Morgan started the inning with a hit-by-pitch before a force out and walk put two aboard with one out. Tyler McManus made the free passes count with a two-run double into the left field corner before Josh Pearson singled with two away to make it 5-2 LSU.

IN THE NOTES

• Austin’s homer was the Jefferson City native’s third of the season. It also ran his hitting streak to eight games.
• Josh Day recorded his 16th multi-hit game of the season with a 2-for-5 afternoon.
• Ross Lovich produced a pinch-hit sac fly in the eighth to pick up his 20th RBI of the season.
• Austin’s four RBI were a career high for the sophomore.
• Mizzou left nine men on base, including four in scoring position in the loss.
