Columbia Wins First Two Games Against the Trojans


Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College baseball team won the first two games of the series against Hannibal-LaGrange in an American Midwest Conference (AMC) showdown. The final game of the three-game set takes place on Saturday.
Columbia: 23-5 (6-2 AMC)
Hannibal-LaGrange: 6-17 (0-8 AMC)

Game 1 (Friday): Columbia def. Hannibal-LaGrange, 4-3 (7 innings)

The Scoring:

  • B3 (CC) – Indy Stanley doubled home Braden DeSonia (CC 1, HLGU 0)
  • T6 (HLGU) – The Trojans tied the game on an RBI ground out (CC 1, HLGU 1)
  • B6 (CC) – Brett Mooney tripled home Jarrett Newel and scored on an RBI single from David Dell (CC 3, HLGU 1)
  • T7 (HLGU) – Hannibal-LaGrange tied the game on a single and ground out. (CC 3, HLGU 3)
  • B7 (CC) – Andrew Paten hit a walk-off single, scoring Kellen Williamson (CC 4, HLGU 3)

Inside the Box:

  • Indy Stanley went 3-4 at the plate with two doubles and an RBI.
  • Four different Cougars scored a run – Braden DeSonia, Myles Jasper, Jarrett Newell, and Brett Mooney.
  • Dan Fick went six innings on the mound, allowing three earned runs and striking out six.
  • Kaleb Richards picked up his fifth win (5-0) of the season after pitching the final inning and giving up one hit.

Game 2: Columbia def. Hannibal-LaGrange, 11-1 (7 innings)
The Scoring:

  • B1 (CC) – Cade Carlson doubled home Braden DeSonia and scored on an RBI double off the bat of Indy Stanley (CC 2, HLGU 0)
  • B3 (CC) – The Cougars added another run on a bases-loaded walk (CC 3, HLGU 0)
  • B5 (CC) – Kellen Williamson scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Jarrett Newell brought home Devyn Lopez in on a single (CC 5, HLGU 0)
  • B6 (CC) – Williamson knocked a two-run single to right field. Devyn Lopez hit a sac fly to score another run. A wild pitch and infield single from David Dell capped off the scoring (CC 10, HLGU 0)
  • T7 (HLGU) – The Trojans added a run on an RBI single. (CC 10, HLGU 1)
  • B7 (CC) – Columbia earned the mercy rule win as Devyn Lopez singled home Cade Carlson. (CC 11, HLGU 1)

Inside the Box:

  • Bryce Taylor (3-1) picked up the win after going six shutout innings, allowing eight hits and striking out five.
  • Cade Carlson, Indy Stanley, and Devyn Lopez racked up two hits each.
  • Carlson scored four runs.
  • Stanley recorded two doubles.
  • As a team, the Cougars drew 12 walks, including three from Jarrett Newell.

The Cougars and Trojans meet for the series finale on Saturday, April 2 at 1:00 PM. The game will take place at Battle High School.
