Brown’s Double-Double Leads Mizzou to Victory Over Wash U

Noah Carter

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Mizzou men’s basketball opened its 2022-23 season with a 89-61 exhibition victory against Washington University Thursday night at Mizzou Arena. The contest served as Mizzou’s lone tuneup before the regular season tips off on Monday.

Following a back-and-forth opening stretch, the Tigers turned on the jets and went on a 15-0 run late in the first half to grab the lead for good. Kobe Brown played a major role in the scoring stretch and earned a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds.

Brown and senior forward Noah Carter used their size to wreak havoc inside. The Tigers scored 64 points in the paint and won the rebounding battle, 38-33.

Led by the strong scoring effort on the interior, Mizzou shot 55.7% from the field and had plenty of opportunities to run in the open court with 19 fastbreak points in the contest.

While Brown led the squad with 25 points, he received assistance from six players who scored at least seven points, including all other members of the starting five. The balanced scoring effort also included 31 points off the bench.

TURNING POINT
Washington kept the contest close through the opening minutes of the game and held a 23-20 lead with 8:06 remaining in the first half. But after a layup by DeAndre Gholston and a thunderous breakaway slam by Brown, the Tigers found their rhythm and embarked on a 25-7 run to end the half, creating a double-digit lead in the process.
