Volleyball Runs Win Streak to Five

Baldwin City, Mo. – The Columbia College volleyball team finished the Baker Invitational with a pair of wins on Saturday. The Cougars started the day by sweeping Haskell (Kan.) and then defeating Saint Mary (Kan.) in five sets.

Columbia has now won five straight.

Columbia (11-4) | Haskell (0-8)
Set 1: Columbia 25 | Haskell 13

Columbia scored five straight to increase their lead to 9-4. The Indians cut their deficit to 9-6 but would not get any closer as the Cougars cruised to the opening set win.

Set 2: Columbia 25 | Haskell 9
The second set was no contest. The Cougars hit .444 in the set and held Haskell to a .000 attacking percentage. With Sude Gundogan serving, the Cougars scored 11 points in a row, including four service aces by Gundogan.

Set 3: Columbia 25 | Haskell 10
Set three was a lot like the second set. Columbia trailed 2-1 early in the set before scoring the following eight points to take a 9-2 lead. The Cougars used a 5-0 run to increase their lead to 10 (16-6) before cruising the sweep.

Columbia (12-4) vs. Saint Mary (8-5)
Set 1: Columbia 20 | Saint Mary 25

The Spires started strong, leading 7-2, including scoring the first five points of the set and forcing a Cougar timeout. Columbia, however, battled back and tied the set at 7-7 before Saint Mary took a 14-9 advantage. The Cougars cut the Spires lead to 15-13, but a quick 3-0 run by USM opened their lead to 18-13, and the Cougars would not recover.

Set 2: Columbia 25 | Saint Mary 22
Set two saw the two teams battle each other point for point. A kill gave USM a 21-17 lead before Columbia ended the set on an 8-1 run to tie the match up at 1-1. 

Set. 3: Columbia 25 | Saint Mary 21
Again, the Spires jumped out to a quick 10-5 lead in the third set. Columbia responded with the following four points to get within one point (10-9). After the Spires took an 18-16 lead, Columbia scored five straight to take a 21-18 advantage. The Spire would tie the set up at 21-21, but Columbia scored the final four points to win the set. 

Set 4: Columbia 13 | Saint Mary 25
The Spires leaped out to another quick lead in set four, 8-2. The Cougars received a kill from Sidney Branson to get within four points (10-6), but USM forced a set five.  

Set 5: Columbia 15 | Saint Mary 13
In the final set, the Spires led 13-9 before the Cougars went to work. The Cougars received two kills from Branson, a kill from Ellie Crede, a service ace from Camila Espejo, and a Spire attack error to end the set and give the Cougars the thrilling come back to win.
