Track and Field Travels for NCAA Indoor Championships

Nachev NCAA Championships Practice

Birmingham, Ala.Mizzou Track and Field will compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday, March 12. With the meet, the Tigers will wrap up the 2022 indoor season before preparing for the outdoor season. The meet will be streamed live on ESPN3 daily and a tape-delay broadcast will be aired on Sunday on ESPNU. Live results will be available throughout the meet on FlashResults.

Mizzou kicked off postseason competition two weeks ago at the SEC Indoor Championships. Roberto Vilches (Mexico City, Mexico) led the way for the Tigers, capturing gold in the men’s high jump. Georgi Nachev (Yambol, Bulgaria) and Martin Prodanov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) took home silver in the men’s triple jump and men’s mile, respectively.

Following the SEC Indoor Championships, three Tigers qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Both Vilches and Nachev punched their tickets, along with Arianna Fisher (San Jose, Calif).

Vilches is set to begin competition in the men’s high jump. Earlier this season, Vilches set the top NCAA indoor mark with a jump of 2.26m (7-5) at the Razorback Invitational. He currently leads the NCAA Division I men’s high jump category and holds the top-mark in indoor school history. This is the third NCAA Championships appearance for Vilches who competed in both the indoor and outdoor championships in 2019. In the 2019 season, Vilches placed 15th at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Nachev will see his second NCAA Indoor Championships in the men’s triple jump. After placing second at SEC Indoor Championships, Nachev holds the fifth-best triple jump nationally with a mark of 16.48m (54-1). This is Nachev’s fourth NCAA Championship appearance after competing in the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2019 and 2021, and NCAA Indoor Championships last season. Last year at the NCAA Indoor Championships, Nachev finished eighth in the competition. Nachev holds one first place and two second place finishes in the three meets he’s competed in this season.

On the women’s side, Fisher will also compete in the triple jump. Fisher holds the eighth-best triple jump nationally with a mark of 13.59m (44-7) that she set Feb. 11 at the Tyson Invitational. Fisher has broken the Mizzou indoor top-mark in women’s jump twice this season to set the new record. This is Fisher’s third appearance at the NCAA Championships as she competed in both the indoor and outdoor championships in 2021. Last season at the NCAA Indoor Championships, Fisher finished 15th.

The Tigers will kick off competition in the NCAA Indoor Championships at 12:30 p.m. CT on Saturday afternoon, as Vilches is set to compete in the men’s high jump. The triple jump squad of Nachev and Fisher will follow the same day with the prelims/finals taking place at 3:45 p.m. CT and 6:45 p.m. CT, respectively.

Following the NCAA Indoor Championships, Mizzou will take a week off before sending squads to the first outdoor meets of the season at the Ole Miss Invitational, Raleigh Relays and Drake Relays March 25-26.
