Tennis Readies For Weekend Double Dip

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri tennis returns to action this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders at the Mizzou Tennis Complex.

The Tigers (2-0), who swept Kansas City last weekend, will square off against Bellarmine on Saturday and Omaha on Sunday. The teams will play two matches each day with action getting started at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. CT. Admission to home matches is free.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Mizzou swept a pair of matches over Kansas City, 7-0 and 7-0, respectively, Sunday at the Mizzou Tennis Complex.
  • The Tigers (2-0) battled the elements as well as the Roos (0-2) as the morning session was forced to the indoor courts by inclement weather in the area. The afternoon doubles matches and the first few games of singles took place outdoors before a second round of storms forced the match to concluded inside. 
  • Mae Canete, Inah Caneta, Emelie Schwarte, Gabriela Martinez and Laura Masic all went 2-0 in singles on the day with freshmen Andrea Artimedi and Koral Koldobski each picking up a victory.
  • Mizzou swept all six doubles matches, with the Canete sisters teaming up to win both of their matches at No. 1 doubles, Schwarte and Artimedi combining to win at No. 2 doubles and Martinez and Masic winning two at No. 3.

SCOUTING BELLARMINE

  • The Knights are making their 2022-23 debut Saturday in Head Coach Brian Slack’s second season.
  • Bellarmine returns sophomore Ekaterina Tikhonko and senior Channing Varnum, while Maja Kozerski returns for the fall season. They are joined by newcomers Lailaa Bashir, Shu Grosso, Vendula Kryslova, Hanley Riner, and Cydney Rogers.
  • Tikhonko was named to the ASUN All-Freshmen Team in the spring and led Bellarmine with 10 singles wins – including a 4-4 ASUN singles record.  Varnum is the lone senior on the roster after notching three doubles wins last year, including two in ASUN play.

SCOUTING OMAHA

  • Omaha is playing their third event of the fall after opening things up at the Drake Drake Invitational (Sept. 9-11) and Cancun College Cup (Sept. 14-17).
  • Head Coach Adam Summit is in his sixth season helming the Mavericks program.
  • They return graduate-student Ines Absisan. The Brussels, Belgium native has 20 career singles wins and is coming off her most successful singles season with eight victories.
  • Omaha added three new rackets to the roster this season in a freshmen Zoe Adkins and Summer Shannon along with a graduate transfer from the University of Nebraska.
