Tennis Kicks Off 2021-22 Season

NCAA Women’s Tennis: MiNCAA Women’s Tennis: Mizzou Tigers vs. Alabama Crimson Tidezzou Tigers vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

MARTIN, TENN. – The Mizzou tennis program opens its 2021-22 season with an away matchup against UT Martin Saturday, Sept. 11. The Tigers and Skyhawks are set to compete at 9:00 a.m. CT and 1:00 p.m. CT in Martin, Tenn. 

SERIES SNAPSHOT

  • Mizzou holds a 2-0 all-time lead against UT Martin, including a victory over the Skyhawks last February. 
  • Last season, the Tigers took down UT Martin 5-2 winning the doubles point and four singles wins. 
  • Ellie Wright, Elys Ventura and Valentine Vazquez Pongruber accounted for three of the Tiger’s four singles points. 

SCOUTING THE SKYHAWKS

  • UT Martin returns an experienced roster from a season ago under third-year head coach, Caitlyn Williams. 
  • The Skyhawks are led by Amelia Campbell who played in the No. 1 singles slot for the entirety of the 2020-21 season where she finished with a team-high three wins. 
  • Sina Albersmeier and Mizuki Sakurai led UT Martin last season with a total of seven doubles wins.

TIGERS IN THE RANKINGS

  • Mizzou made a record-breaking splash in the ITA Preseason Rankings, with a top-25 doubles pair and top-40 singles competitor. 
  • Bronte Murgett and Marta Oliviera earned a program-best No. 7 preseason doubles ranking after going 9-5 together in 2020-21. 
  • The doubles pair had four victories against ranked opponents last season and finishing the season ranked No. 31. 
  • The No. 7 national ranking is the third highest for a doubles pair out of the SEC. 
  • Murgett was also tabbed No. 34 as a singles competitor, also a program best. 

NOTABLES

  • Murgett is coming off a successful 2020-21 season, where she ended with a No. 52 national ranking before earning the first win in program history for an indvidual in the NCAA Tournament. 
  • Earlier this week, Murgett and Olivieria received a main draw invite to the ITA All-American Championship where they will compete Oct. 1-Oct. 10 in Charleston, S.C as one of 28 pairs selected nationwide for the main draw. 
  • Murgett will also compete in singles, as just the second Missouri Tiger to do so. 
  • The Tigers return a total of seven athletes from last year’s roster, where the team worked its way up to a No. 36 national ranking after starting the season with a No. 178 rank. 
  • Mizzou’s 15 wins in 2020-21 rank as the fifth-most in a single-season, and most since 2015. 
  • Mizzou also welcomes the addition of five newcomers, including South Carolina transfer Gabriela Martinez and 2021 NJCAA Champion Emelie Schwarte.
