Allen, Texas – The Columbia College softball team opened their season with five tough games this weekend. Opening on day one with games against the NAIA leading #1 Oklahoma City University and #3 University of Science and Arts, the Cougars would drop both games, 1-2 and 2-10.
On day two, the Cougars faced Texas Wesleyan University followed by Northwest University. Columbia would beat Texas Wesleyan 3-0 before falling in a tight contest to Northwest, 9-10.
Today, day three, the Cougars ran into the surging Bruins of Bellevue University and dropped a 0-8 contest.
Throughout the five contests Ella Schouten was a force in the circle as she collected 20 strikeouts through 13 innings pitched, only giving up two earned runs and going 1-1 through two games.
Emily King led the defensive effort as she would finish with 26 putouts, while Athena Wheeler had 20 of her own.
Athena Wheeler finished the weekend with four hits; one double, one home run, and two RBI’s. Tasia Green and Suzanna Shanks each had four RBI’s, respectively.
The team returns to action on February 18th when they travel to Kansas City to take on Park University and Baker University, before competing against Benedictine College and Avila University on Sunday.
